Welcome to the Spring Edition of Risk Review, GUAA’s award-winning online newsletter! We hope to see many of you in Nashville for GUAA’s fast-approaching Annual Meeting, June 11-14, at the Loew’s Vanderbilt Hotel. If you can’t make the Nashville meeting, then hopefully we’ll catch up with you at our fall meeting in San Diego, October 29-November 2. We really would like to see you. And let’s face it, a change of scenery now and then can work wonders for your entire attitude.

My problem is too many scenery changes! In April and May alone, I spent 19 nights away from home and found myself driving around in 11 different states, including visiting the great state of Tennessee twice. Not that I’m complaining (besides, it would probably only take my co-workers 2-3 weeks to launch me on some type of NASA shuttle if I wasn't traveling), but the other night while staring at a half full suitcase, I couldn’t remember if I was packing or unpacking, so I asked my cat, Mick. He answered by jumping into the suitcase. I’m telling you, cats are no help! This brings me to the very brief, but sad story of Max, our beloved Labrador retriever mix. You can read all about Max in Section 6 of Risk Review.

The threat of a pandemic flu outbreak is scarier than any Stephen King novel. For the latest medical update, please check out A Pandemic Flu Update by Dr. Mark Skillan, Vice President and Chief Medical Director of Munich American Re.

We have two expert Guest Columnists this issue, and all this for the price of one! Kevin Riley, Sr. Vice President with John Hewitt and Associates shares his infinite knowledge on the true definition of Basic Monthly Earnings (BME) in… FYI on BME. In addition, we are including a republication from ING Re’s 4th quarter installment of Disability Forum: Renewal Underwriting: The Power of Working with LTD Benefits Analysts, by Jim Ojala, Chief Underwriter, Standard Insurance Company

You’ll also discover our traditional standby’s, The President’s Welcome by Mark Walker, and Meeting Planner Notes by Karen Gritton, GUAA’s Meeting Planner Extraordinaire, who gives us the real scoop on our upcoming GUAA meetings. As usual, we saved the very best for last. You’ll find a ridiculously easy Trivia Contest at the very end of Risk Review. Just send your correct answers via email to jhiers@marclife.com and you’ll be eligible to become the lucky winner of a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble! Come on, give it a try! After all, it’s a documented fact that only those who swing the bat ever get a base hit!

We sincerely hope you enjoy the latest edition of Risk Review
