Reinsurance Committee Review

The historic city of Charleston, South Carolina was an excellent venue for the November 2001 meeting of GUAA. Local flavor included the Citadel, quaint carriage rides with guides well-versed on the city' s lore, civil war era monuments, and plenty of good southern food. Aside from all the fun and exciting things to do in Charleston, GUAA once again held many informative workshops. Included were several Reinsurance Committee sponsored talks.

Gabe House from Disability RMS, Donna Jarvis of Axa, and Howard Helpin from Hartford Life Group Reinsurance Plus were part of a panel that discussed the interaction between the direct underwriter and the reinsurance underwriter needed to obtain a quote for life and disability reinsurance. Interesting insights were shared on required information and the subsequent risk evaluation to bind reinsurance coverage.

Boris Garcia Zakzuk, of General & Cologne Life Re, presented the 2001 U.S. Group Life Survey which included group life underwriting, pricing, and claims management practice. This was an update to the survey presented by Boris in the fall of 2000.

Tony Forte from General & Cologne Life Re and Jim Helton, FSA from Covenant Insurance Consulting Services discussed Critical Illness. The discussion included trends, the interaction between pricing and product design, underwriting, and an overview of Critical Illness Insurance.

Carolyn Pollard, Disability Consulting Group and Boris Garcia Zakzuk moderated the popular Lets Talk Shop reinsurance session. Understandably, the topics of discussion centered around fallout from the events of September 11th and potential ramifications for our industry going forward. Many unique perspectives and ideas were shared.
