Disability Committee Review

By Tom Kirner
Disability Consulting Group

The Disability Committee had a full agenda for the Montreal meeting. Our theme for the meeting was Information;

sources and uses for the underwriter in analyzing risk. Topics ranged from proposal information for large and small cases

the hard data (a topic we could most likely discuss at every meeting), to underwriting corporate culture

the soft side of underwriting.

Some of the presentations are available in electronic form. Simply send an e-mail to Tkirner@dcgre.com and I will forward a copy.

The presentations we have include:

CANADA

Renewal increases of 20-40% common without the customer shopping.

Plan design tends to be more basic. More 70% and 2/3 benefits.

More blue collar.

Single payor health care system.

Unlimited M&N

US

Renewal increases must be kept around 10% in order to keep the customer from shopping.

Plan designs have gotten more rational. Maxes tend to be higher.

Still tend to stick with white collar.

Health care system more responsive to the LTD insurer.

24 month M&N still the standard.

We held a double "Let's Talk Shop" session instead of breaking up into smaller groups. Much of the conversation flowed around the differences in underwriting LTD in Canada versus the United States. Some of the general topics included:

For the next GUAA meeting in Charleston in the fall, the Committee has as a theme:

Current Events in Disability - Update on some of the latest trends.

In addition, we will host "Let's Talk Shop" workshops as well. If you have specific questions you would like addressed in the "Let's Talk Shop" session or have any ideas for future sessions, please e-mail them to me at Tkirner@dcgre.com. See you in Charleston.
