What A Bargain

By Don Russells
Vice President

We surveyed participants of our most recent events to see what people liked most about GUAA. Overwhelmingly, respondents pointed to the networking opportunities, discussions with peers about current business issues, learning from people with many years of experience, and having fun. One person said that they paid for their trip with what they learned. When it comes right down to it, GUAA is a bargain compared to any other industry meeting you attend. We typically offer at least twenty workshops in two and a half days. Our committees work hard to provide as many as six workshops on Life, Disability, Long Term Care, Medical, and Dental Products. Workshop materials are captured in a binder for future reference. In addition, GUAA offers a notable keynote speaker to kick off each meeting.

Our semi-annual newsletter offers information that you can use in your job today. If you unfortunately had to miss a meeting, each Committee provides a recap of the highlights.

Because the product committees drive GUAA, each member has an opportunity to participate in the future of the organization. If you have ideas, energy, and the willingness to get things done, you can get involved and join a committee. This is another way to get to meet people from your business and contribute to the success of the organization. Click on www.guaa.com. Here, you will find information such as upcoming events, registration information, meeting highlights, job postings, and links to other useful websites. You can email the Board from this site with ideas or suggestions.

Although GUAA tries to pick meeting sites that will be fun and exciting, we also try to consider the travel cost and logistics. In addition, we like to choose cities where you can conduct other business. We recognize that expenses are important to you and your companies and we'd like to make your attendance as cost effective as we can. GUAA is a progressive organization. Over the years, we have gone from being a small, underwriter-only association, to being a powerful entity with five hundred members from diverse product backgrounds and varied expertise.

We have actuaries, compliance specialists, claims managers, risk managers, and underwriters from all levels. We will expand as needed to support the members of the association as our industry moves into the electronic age of underwriting and risk management. We have a great meeting planned for June. Hope to see you in Montreal!
